Black-stained oak. Sofa with a slightly cracked backrest in back, original upholstery on springs, organic fill, original over with the same pattern as the chairs from the previous auction. The Cubist side table is a part of the same suite. The Cubist morphology of uneven lines is applied in the horizontal design of an otherwise simple composition, with outward-jutting legs supporting the sharply angled armrests. The back of the sofa is uncovered and is intended to be placed against a wall. Architect Pavel Janák was one of the most important Czech Cubist theorists. He studied in Vienna under the famous architect and urban planner Otto Wagner. He later became a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Prague and influenced an entire generation of designers. He was also one of the co-founders of Artěl. Janák designed one of the most well-known examples of Czech Cubism in furniture – a wooden chair with an atypical triangular backrest.
