Oil on cardboard. Signed lower right: “PANUŠKA”. Throughout his life, Panuška clung to his love for nature. He started painting simple motifs from the open landscape at the Academy in Prague in around 1893. After two decades of an inclination for Symbolism, k Symbolism, which resulted in his well-known fairy-tale and macabre scenes, in 1920 he returned his focus to the Czech countryside. This landscape, with its fresh, relaxed color scheme, comes from this period of his career. Panuška is considered the most original student of the famous Mařák School, connecting the older tradition of Realism with more modern Impressionist approaches to painting. He significantly builds on the work of Antonín Chittussi, whose paintings were often of ponds, marshlands and meadows.
