Emanuel Frinta is known primarily as a printmaker and illustrator. Figurative subjects feature heavily in the artist's somewhat overlooked paintings. In this respect, the 1939 still life offered here is unique and the execution curious. Meticulous, tiny, densely applied touches of the brush with slight impasto relief occasionally appear in Frinta's work as a method for developing details, but they never cover an the entire canvas. This painting is an exceptional work of high aesthetic value whose quality stands out only in the original; no reproduction can convey it accurately.
