Zdeněk Tůma repeated his trip to France in 1936 and stayed there for more than a year. He visited briefly London and then returned to Bordeaux. He painted around Perpignan and spent a year in the farming village of Collioure. A versatile, talented artist, Zdeněk Tůma studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Professors Hynais and Obrovský and became a member of the Union of Fine Artists; he undertook further private studies in Paris. He was an illustrator for humor and satire magazines, and in 1936 he took a study trip to England and Spain. In 1939 he held his first solo exhibition at the Topič Salon in Prague and later at the Vilímek Gallery. He created stage sets and started to consort with Bohemian social circles in Prague, falling hopelessly in love with Adina Mandlová, whom he later wed.
