Plaster. A sculpture of Maria Havlatová, née Pokorná, is from the family estate. A period photograph of painter Karel Havlata with photographs of his wife in the studio are enclosed with the work. Havlata was a friend of Ladislav Zívr's from Nová Paka, where Zívr was born to the family of a potter on May 23, 1909. As a small child he spent a lot of time in the family workshop, and thus there was no question that he would also go on to work with clay. He originally did an apprenticeship as a potter, but later attended the School of Applied Arts in Prague, where he applied his knowledge of the characteristics of clay, his sense for modeling and his exceptional sense of three-dimensional space. Zívr is considered one of the best Czech sculptors of the 20th century.
