Adolf Born sought out satirical themes that allowed him to fully develop his imagination. The motif of Don Quixote on a frail horse (in this motif, skillfully composed of fallen branches with lurking ravens) inspired him to create several works. The comic heroism, secret love, and adventure of Miguel Cervantes' story are a naturally welcome combination for Born's artistic means.
