Otakar Kubín (1883 - 1969) IN THE GARDEN

The portrait of an older man in a hat, probably Max Brod, is an exceptional example of Kubín's early work, evoking a similarity to the theme of the expressionist painting Among Sunflowers. The treatment of the subject is also typical of the artist. Kubín's figures or portrait subjects are always alone in space, in uncomplicated poses, without exaggerated expressions. The essence seems to come from within the models. The painter always chose to portray people who were "marked" by life, rich in inner life or tested by fate. Included is the original envelope inscribed by the author to Maxi Brod. The work is accompanied by an expert opinion by PhDr. Karel Srp.
