The famous "Red and Blue" chair from 1918 is Rietveld's response to Piet Mondrian's work. Although the chair was originally designed in 1918, its color scheme of primary colors (red, yellow, blue) complemented by black—so closely associated with the Dutch art and architecture movement De Stijl—was used around 1923. Hoping that most of his furniture would eventually be mass-produced rather than handmade, Rietveld strove for simplicity of construction. The wooden parts that make up the red-blue chair have standard dimensions of wood that was commonly available at the time.
