Village Dance is a beautiful, lively genre painting with a rural theme. The subject matter in Dutch and Flemish painting varies according to the specific circumstances – Pieter Brueghel the Younger painted a very similar composition, Dance Around the Maypole, and also depicted village wedding dances and even brawls. In addition to the obvious merriment, similar paintings also have a moralistic side, which draws attention to human failings and encourages moderation.
