Jan Křen, a native of Myslibor near Telč, decided to work on the family farm after leaving high school at the age of 14. From childhood he drew and painted, at first influenced by Mikoláš Alš. He was interested in many disciplines - from painting to physics, biology and mineralogy. During his lifetime, he created approximately one thousand paintings, painted with oil paints on sololite. The result was an original painting and filosofic work combining folk art with reflections on the origin and functioning of the universe and man's place in it. There is also poetry and peculiar humour glossing the life of rural society in the era of real socialism. He donated a significant collection of paintings to the town of Telč.
