Karel Malich (1924 - 2019) LIGHT

From the end of the 1980s until 2001, Karel Malich created a series of large-format pastels that form a thematically coherent meditative whole with the titles “Light”, “I Saw It”, “Energy”, etc. Through an analysis of the relationship between the seer and the seen, he arrives at visions and discoveries of inner light. The drawing form of pastel allows for the immediate capture of an intense experience, and Malich's work only arrived at this starting point after a certain amount of time. The artist transfers his exploration of colour relationships and experiences with inner light onto paper using simplified signs. Geometric and organic shapes, decompositions of light and interweaving patterns do not describe the reality of the symbols, but form a language of their own that searches within the unconscious and suggests a higher meaning to the whole endeavour.
