Illusion paintings (Trompe d'oeil) were one of the popular genres of the second half of the 17th century. We encounter the illusion of a three-dimensional space in which objects are placed in a supposed perspective - often an illusionary frame, a bulletin board, a shelf where objects are arranged. A similar typology of faces can be found, for example, in the works of the Flemish David Teniers the Younger, who may have been a model for an unknown master.
