Jan Václav Mrkvička is considered one of the founders of Bulgarian modern painting. He is invaluable as a portraitist and documenter of the Bulgarian countryside and folk costumes. He was able to create both almost photorealistic works and briskly painted suggestive likenesses with vivid expressiveness as in the present work. Man in Bulgarian Kalpak represents a modern and faithful way of portraiture.
