From the expert opinion of PhDr. Nadězda Blažíčková-Horová: "The submitted oil Rock Formations is a successful example of Piepenhagen's interest in ruins and natural formations already at the time of his fluctuation between the classicist starting point and his inclination towards romantic schemes, to which he gravitated by nature. Piepenhagen's paintings are not of a particular natural setting; he painted not en plein air but at home in his studio, drawing his subjects from contemporary prints, for example by Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), whose second edition of Liber veritatis was published in graphic reproductions in Rome in 1815 and made an immediate impact on the whole of Central European landscape painting, influenced Piepenhagen's work of the 1820s quite clearly. Later, he sought inspiration in the tufts of moss he grew and arranged outside the windows of his summer residence at Jenerálka near Divoká Šárka."
