BAROQUE BOZZETTO

A sculpture of Pietà depicting the Virgin Mary holding the body of Christ after he was taken down from the cross; behind the group stands a wooden cross. Polychrome and patinated surface with signs of age and minor abrasions in places. The whole is mounted on a profiled pedestal. A bozzetto is a small sculptural model serving as a design or study for a larger sculpture. It is usually made of materials such as clay, wax, plaster, or terracotta and is characterized by a freer, sketch-like modeling.
