In 1965, Karásek won a silver medal at the International Book Art Exhibition in Leipzig for his illustrations for Lyman Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. His work is interwoven with experiences from his childhood, especially his mother's storytelling and singing of folk ballads. As an illustrator of children's books, he is one of the most interesting figures to have inspired children's imaginations at that time.
