Rudolf Mather was born in Olomouc. He studied at the Vienna Academy, but his studies were interrupted by military service. He was captured in Russia. His work bears the legacy of the German Renaissance masters, is strongly expressive and reflects mainly social themes. Although he spent much of his life in Moravia and participated in its cultural life, he was displaced after 1945.
