Basra has been the scene of several significant conflicts in modern history – the Battle of Basra in World War I, the uprising against Saddam Hussein's government, battle for Basra in 2003, etc. This painting by an artist originally from Iraq, who is relatively unknown in our part of the world, probably reflects some of the tragic experiences the artist had in his city.
