The white porcelain sculpture known as the Bologna Dog was designed by Johann Joachim Kandler. The Bolognese dog (reportedly the favorite animal of Augustus III) was first mentioned in February 1735 and served as a decoration for the Japanese Palace in Dresden. It depicts a dog with sculpted fur sitting on its hind legs with its mouth open and its head turned to the left. Bolognese dogs enjoyed enormous popularity in the 18th century and were among the highly prized gifts exchanged among the aristocracy. Model No. 78512. Imperceptibly restored.
