John Simpson (1811 - 1871) MINIATURE PORTRAIT LUCRETIA

Finely executed portrait miniature of a woman with dark hair, dressed in a light gown with one shoulder exposed, inspired by the historical or mythological theme of Lucretia. Painted on ivory, in its original oval frame with gilded relief decoration of leaves and berries. On the reverse, an inscription in red reads: “LUCRETIA / By J. Simpson Janr / 1847 / after R. R. Leslie R.A.”, confirming the authorship of John Simpson and most probably identifying the work as after a painting by the renowned artist Richard Redgrave Leslie, member of the Royal Academy.  Dimensions including frame: 14 × 10 cm.
