REST IN THE GROVE MEISSEN

Porcelain figural group depicting a pair of lovers resting beneath spreading oak trees. The young woman lies at the feet of the young man, who holds her hand and offers her a wreath of flowers with his other hand, gazing at her tenderly. Both are dressed in richly detailed Rococo attire – the woman wears a floral dress with a blue bodice and a yellow skirt, while the man is dressed in a mauve coat and striped trousers. Behind them is a basket of flowers and a reclining sheep, referencing the idealized vision of rural life. The tree in the background forms a sculptural frame for the entire composition. The base is irregularly oval, adorned with a gilded line. Produced by the Meissen porcelain manufactory.

Damage: minor surface wear and a few chipped leaves.
