Pair portraits of the Holy Roman Emperor and Archduchess of Austria by Martin van Meytens, a Swedish painter who settled in Vienna and worked there. He learned portrait painting from his father, Martin Meytens Sr., specializing in portraits and miniatures on enamel. He created a large number of portraits of the aristocracy. Maria Theresa was his generous patron and commissioned him to paint relatively opulent subjects such as the wedding of Joseph II and Isabella of Parma.
