The genre painting in the view through the stone arch is reminiscent of the works of Willem van Miers. The composition, tightly framed by the arch, often offered glimpses into various shops, pubs or even dentists' offices. Very often the illusion of a "peek" into a very lively or even conflicting situation is created. Willem, Jan and Frans II, direct descendants of the famous 17th century painter Frans I van Mieris, continued both the style and themes of the paintings and the prestige of the Miers name. Willem van Mieris achieved extraordinary popularity in the Netherlands and his paintings entered the collections of many prominent members of the new Dutch upper class and foreign nobility.
