The painting is a study for a commissioned Portrait of a Lady in a Red Dress. The painter modified the final version at the model's request, so this study represents his initial and immediate concept. The final painting shows a significant difference in the dress, with a strongly accentuated waist and a richly layered skirt. The identity of the client is unknown, as is the location of the final version of the painting. The study is painted in a free, confident style with an emphasis on light. The style corresponds to Putz's works from around the mid-1920s, before his departure for Brazil. The painting on offer comes from the artist's estate and has been in the possession of his heirs in Munich until now. This is the first time it has been offered on the art market. Ref.: PUTZ, Helmut, Leo Putz. Werkverzeichnis in zwei Bänden. Kastner, Wolznach 1994, vol. 2, p. 856, cat. no. 1990.
