František Janoušek reacted quite sensitively to the climate of war. The delicately shaded rose in a desolate, icy landscape is one of his more lyrical, slightly archaic motifs; during the war, Janoušek tended toward surrealism in his new creations, which were full of anxiety and horror. František Janoušek was an outstanding painter and one of the most important artists on the Czech scene in the first half of the 20th century.
