Jiří Anderle (1936) CARPE DIEM, CARPE NOCTEM

In his work, Jiří Anderle repeatedly reflected on the theme of transience - "vanitas". In the old master's perfect expression we find a strong appeal to the perception of the inexorability of time, the enjoyment of the fruits of life before the cycle reaches death. It is perhaps the motifs of eroticism that accompany the figures in the foreground that remind us that moments of savouring life and pleasure can briefly detach us from death, even as events inevitably bring us closer to it. Today, Jiří Anderle is one of the most important Czech printmakers and the role of man, whether mythological, artistic, historical or social, has repeatedly been at the centre of his work.
