Ota Janeček's works are among the most sought-after items at auctions. His multilayered and numerous works, with which he explored the seen world in detail, range from calligraphic lines and decompositions of surfaces to emotive figurative themes and lyrical records of nature. The present work, Mother, is unusually dark and raw for his oeuvre. It is possible that it is an illustration for a book. His lifelong work was crowned by a major retrospective exhibition at the Mánes in Prague in 1995. Works by Ota Janeček can be found in the National Gallery in Prague, the Tate Gallery in London, the National Library in Paris, the MC Nay Institute in San Antonio, USA, the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts in Japan and the National Gallery of Wales.
