Karel Špillar had a predilection for pastel tones, a subtle refined technique that often crystallized into impression. With fluid strokes, he models a seascape that transitions smoothly from the water surface to the horizon, creating the impression of a distant shore. He works with complementary tones of blue and golden orange. Karel Špillar studied in 1885-93 at the Prague School of Applied Arts in the studio of František Ženíšek. In 1902-9 he lived in Paris.
