František Kaván was a painterly poet of the Czech landscape. He painted the landscape humbly so that everyone who knew it could identify with it. His retirement to the countryside heralded a long and fruitful period when he went into the plein air at various times. A modest and quiet painter, he chose nature as his companion and avoided the city. The simple life eluded him and shaped his quiet landscapes into a unique and vast oeuvre.
