Jan Slavíček, son of the famous painter Antonín Slavíček, studied at the Prague Academy under Max Švabinský, Vratislav Nechleba, Otakar Nejedlý and Jan Preisler. He was a member of Umělecká Beseda and SVU Mánes. He undertook several study trips, especially to Italy, France and Corsica. During his stay in France in 1928, he created the painting of the Rock in Etretat, a summarily and energetically conceived veduta of a landscape formation popular among landscape painters and often repeated. The painting is based on Cézanne's concision and the lessons of the Paris School are evident. Moreover, the layering of colour and the confident, dynamic brushwork are also close to the painting of Václav Špála from the same period.
