Emil Orlik is represented in several collections around the world: the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Portland Art Museum. He was born in Prague in 1870, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the son of a tailor. He studied alongside Paul Klee at Heinrich Knirr's private art school and, from 1891, at the Munich Academy. He travelled extensively in Europe and also visited Japan, where he was introduced to the technique of woodcut.
