Josef Jíra was a sensitive and at the same time peculiar man with striking intelligence. Such a combination of qualities, if not channeled by humility, often culminates in an inner struggle and a clash with reality. He perceived life, its colours and stories, talked to people and projected his childhood memories onto canvases. Yet, in these intimately sensitive subjects, there are powerfully dramatic colour contrasts, sharp contrasts of subtle touch and structurally ordered colour traps. In Nocturne, we witness a lovers' scene at the edge of a forest in the setting sun. The intimate yet dramatically captured moment captures the masterfully poignant lyricism of the moment and the physicality of love in seclusion.
