Otto Gutfreund (1889 - 1927) CUBIST BUST

This Cubist bust from Gutfreund's peak pre-war period was strongly inspired by Spanish Synthetic Cubism. The figural motif is reduced to basic features – a hint of an eye in the form of an opening and geometrically defined edges evoking a nose and chin. The human figure is not modeled in the traditional way, but transformed into an architecturally conceived construction in which the organic form is subordinated to the principles of Cubist structuring.
