Josef Váchal was a painter, graphic artist, illustrator, sculptor, and poet. He excelled as an original artist, particularly in the technique of color woodcut, which attracted attention at international exhibitions in Cologne and Florence. He trained as a bookbinder and attended a private school run by Antonín Kalvoda. He lived most of his life in seclusion and poverty, fearlessly forging his own path regardless of the ridicule and neglect of art critics.
