GOTHIC MADONNA

This late Gothic Madonna, probably from western Bohemia, is characterized by its massive, block-like conception of the figure and its static nature. The drapery is rendered in hard folds layered on the front of the figure, which are harmonized by the wavy opening of the upper cloak dividing the figure in half. The typical calm face of Mary is characterized by delicate carving, in contrast to the more plastic carving of the baby Jesus in her arms. Remnants of the original polychromy and gilding of the drapery. Hollowed out at the back.
