The atmosphere and rhythm of the city and its inhabitants became the main theme of Kotík's paintings in the 1930s. During this period, his views changed, oscillating from sharply defined figures to a more diffuse, lyrical approach that emphasized atmosphere and emotional charge. His encounter with the capital city and the main artistic life did not meet his expectations, and he struggled with feelings of skepticism. He was very uncomfortable with the centralized organization of associations. Among the theorists of Kotík's work, František Kovárna was particularly impressed, praising his drawings as an "erotic linear song." The submitted work has a pencil inscription on the back reading "Kladno 1934," where Kotík exhibited and František Kovárna wrote the foreword to the exhibition.
