Although the painting has a distinctly Dutch style, it also reveals an experience of the Italian landscape – particularly in the descriptive accuracy with which the Milvio Bridge is depicted. The bridge often captured the imagination of travelers and artists and was a very important point of access to the city of Rome for those coming from the north. The concept is reminiscent of the work of Jan Baptist Weenix, whose stay in the Eternal City is documented between 1642 and 1646. The artist enjoyed considerable success in Rome. After returning to his homeland, Weenix continued to paint landscapes and Italian scenes and also Italianized his name to Giovanni Battista. A composition attributed to Weenix, which differs only in details, has already appeared on the market.
