Jan Smetana was a member of the Group 42 and also of the Art Department of the UB, SČUG Hollar, and later became a member of the Group 58. In 1936, he began studying at the Czech Technical University in Prague at the Faculty of Architecture under O. Blažíček, K. Pokorný, and C. Bouda. The abstract composition Noční přírodopis III (Night Natural History III) conveys sensations through organic structures and colors, whose expressiveness and richness are unmistakable in Jan Smetana's works. In the 1970s, he was also inspired by music and often listened to classical music while creating his compositions.
