NURSING MADONNA

According to the opinion of Dr. Jaromír Šíp, it is probably the work of a Dutch, possibly Antwerp painter. He concludes this mainly from the combination of various figural types - a chubby child and a much more subtle Madonna. The theme of Virgo Lactans often appeared in Dutch and Flemish painting, even in smaller commissions for domestic altars, and its foundations go back to early Christian iconography, but was nevertheless condemned by the Council of Trent as inappropriate nudity of saints in public spaces. The work is accompanied by a laboratory survey.
