Still lifes are Holý's favourite subject, which he devoted himself to especially in the 1920s, when his palette brightened and gained vitality under the influence of his study trip to Paris and Brittany. Still Life with a Cup and Lemons is a prime example of Holý's First Republic work, in which a celebration of life and democracy is evident. The pastorally conceived fruit is brought out by vigorous brushstrokes and combines the painter's lifelong interest in expression and colourism. Holý studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under J. Preisler, V. Bukovac and J. Obrovský and also attended the graphic specialty of M. Švabinský. He played an important role in the Social Group Ho-Ho-Ko-Ko, which he founded in 1924 together with artists K. Holan, P. Kotík and K. Kotrba.
