Signed works by Maxim Kopf are truly rare on the Czech market. The canvas for auction is dated around 1934, from the artist's second stay in Tahiti. Maxim Kopf, a German who lived in Prague from the age of six and obtained Czechoslovak citizenship following World War I, was one of the most distinguished figures on the Prague art scene. He attended the Academy, where his teachers included Vlaho Bukovac and Karel Krattner. In 1927, he was one of the founding members of the Prager Secession art association. Following the occupation of Czechoslovakia, he decided to emigrate to France, but there he and other Czech artists were imprisoned and accused of espionage. He was later able to reach the United States, where he remained until the end of his life. Assessment by Professor PhDr. Tomáš Vlček, CSc. Oil on canvas, signed "M.Kopf Tahiti" on top left.
