François Maurice Eberl was a Czech native who painted most of his life in Paris. He is best known for his naturalistic paintings, which faithfully depicted the nightlife of the Montmartre district. Gamblers, prostitutes, alcoholics and drug addicts appeared in his paintings and created many sensual female acts. But he did not seek a sensation at all costs, but a depiction of humanity and life in the shadow of romanticized and glittering Paris. He himself came from a well-to-do family, but he often visited the environment of lower-ranking individuals, nightclubs and secluded alleys, and gratefully painted there.
