PERSIAN RUG SAROUK FERAGHAN

High quality hand knotted wool carpet on cotton warp, a masterful work belonging to the revival of Persian urban carpets. Although the Sarouk region (to which the village of Feraghan belongs) was famous in the early 20th century for producing predominantly red, all-over floral carpets for export to the USA, it had earlier gained fame among the European aristocracy for another type of carpet, which featured a strikingly jagged giant floral medallion in its centre, surrounded by an attractive array of small flowers, clusters and ruffles. At the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna, this type of Persian carpet caused a well-deserved stir, and the prestigious exhibition under the auspices of the Persian royal dynasty opened the way for it to enter the homes of the European elite - a fact to which the personal visit of the Shah of Persia, Nasser ad-Din Qajar, certainly contributed in no small measure. This unique type of Persian carpet has earned a reputation for its impeccable technical workmanship, high-quality natural colours, attractive design and, last but not least, its wool of unusual quality. The entire composition of this rare piece, now highly regarded internationally among leading interior designers, very artfully and attractively refers to the flowering garden of paradise.
