Along with the symbolism of the objects, vanitas paintings can be interpreted based on their composition, lighting, and historical context. The skull and flowers of fleeting beauty are accompanied by a scroll bearing a musical composition and the inscription “All is vanity.” The snail shell refers to mortal life, which slowly slips away.
