Although this object resembles works of art from the Dhakin Plateau region of India in the 18th century, it originates from the easternmost outpost of Islamic civilization. It may be an alloy of zinc, copper, and tin, possibly with an admixture of lead, but a metallurgical analysis would provide more information. It is a pan dan (also known as a pandan), a container for areca nuts, lime paste, and betel leaves, all of which were ingredients for the so-called betel bite, an integral part of court and bourgeois pastimes in various parts of Asia. An interesting and rare object of museum, collection, and aesthetic quality. Patina, unpolished, heavy traces of age and use. Philippines, Mindanao, Maranao people, 19th century.
