Jan Štursa first studied at the School of Sculpture and Stonemasonry in Hořice and from 1899 he attended the Prague Academy. His early work reflects elements of Art Nouveau symbolism, while the later one (the sculptor lived to be only 44) focuses on portraiture. Well-known portraits include Max Švabinský, T. G. Masaryk, Božena Němcová and Alois Jirásek.
