A KAYSERI RUG
Kolem 1940
silk, cotton
183 x 127 cm (h x w)
| 816 €
A specific type of carpet from the Central Anatolia Region, which was once produced especially for the European market, which craved for silk carpets, but which were not produced in sufficient quantities in Turkish manufactories and, moreover, their price was too high for many end customers. Therefore, a segment of more affordable carpets was created, hand-knotted from so-called mercerised cotton (often mixed with residual natural silk), and almost exclusively with a cotton warp. These carpets were invariably dyed with synthetic dyes and their design is a mixture of Anatolian and Persian floral patterns, which are stylised composites of a variety of plants, including roses, carnations, peonies, hyacinths, etc.
