A hand-knotted wool rug on a wool warp from the Southwestern Caucasus—the Kazak region (modern-day Armenia). This antique Caucasian rug is living proof of why the captivating and energetic design of the so-called Kazaks has come to be used as a general term for all Caucasian rugs. Although it cannot be said with certainty which ethnic group wove it, this is a very impressive and high-quality domestic rug made of lustrous mountain wool. Distinctive hexagonal medallions in vibrant indigo blue rest on a deep red background, which is entirely derived from the root of the madder plant (Rubia tinctorum). The most striking element of the decorative wide border is undoubtedly the pair of stylized birds, which reinforce the impression that this was most likely a wedding carpet. The aesthetic purity of the design, natural colors, and full pile make this carpet a specimen of investment quality.
