GREEK CHURCH

oil tempera, plaster
Diameter 22 cm

Vlastimil Beneš was thematically influenced by folk art; his works communicate in a straightforward and unpretentious manner. He did not seek artistic exhibitionism, but he understood contemporary art movements very well and is associated with the work of Group 42. The motif of a Greek church is complemented by the phrase “Agathe Tyche,” which in its original sense invokes the goddess Tyche (lucky chance) and, in a figurative sense, also appears as a wish for good fortune.
