Adolf Liebscher (1857 - 1919) LOVE IN ANCIENT ROME

Adolf Liebscher belonged to the generation of the National Theater and was sought after for his historical subjects, allegories, and decorative paintings. He also contributed to magazines, and his paintings were reproduced on popular postcards, as is the case with the work presented here. His style is rooted in classical academic drawing combined with vibrant colors and luminosity. Within the Art Nouveau movement, Liebscher slightly rearranges the color scheme and the flow of light in his compositions, but he never strays beyond the bounds of romantic idyll.
